Datacolor's C. David Tobie Wins International Photo Competition

It's good to be reminded once in a while that our Digital Imaging Team is not just passionate about color; they are passionate photographers as well. Last year Digital Imaging Developer David Miller won a photographic competition award for one of his images, and European General Manager Christoph Gamper was honored with a 12 page personal portfolio in France's leading photography magazine Chasseur d'Images last summer.

This month Product Technology Manager C. David Tobie has reminded us once again; the LensBaby Sponsored Selective Focus Photo Competition judging was recently completed, and David's entry was selected for the top award. The winning image was shot in Tuscany, Italy, not far from where Tuscany Photographic Workshops are based; no coincidence, since David was in Tuscany to work with TPW when the photo was taken. We're sure that David's passion for photography will continue to fuel the development of great color tools for photographers here at Datacolor.

Expert Advice
Ambient Light and Screen-to-Print Matching

One often-overlooked link in the color management chain is ambient light. Its possible to have a calibrated monitor and a profiled printer, and still not get good screen-to-print matching, if your ambient lighting conditions are not appropriate.

Spyder2PRO divides ambient light into these five categories:

1: Very Low: appropriate for prepress image editing. Calibrate the display to a White Luminance level of 85-100 cd/m^2* and a White Point of 5000K (warm white) to compensate for the eye's cooler response at low light levels. LCD monitors (including laptops) can be used in this situation as well as CRT displays.

2: Moderately Low: dim, but appropriate for photo image editing. Calibrate the display to a White Luminance level of 125-150 cd/m^2 and a White Point of 5800K (slightly warm white) to compensate for the eye's slightly cooler response at moderately low light levels. LCD displays (including laptops) can be used in this situation as well as very bright CRT displays.

Photoshop Tip of the Month
Camera Raw Trick

If you're using Camera Raw, there's a trick you can use to find out which parts of your image will turn white/black as you tweak the exposure. Just hold the Option key (PC: Alt key) while you're dragging the Exposure or Shadows slider and then look in the Preview window to see where pixels will become white (or black).

ChubbyHubby Announces Photography Contest Winners!

Wow! When Cathay Photo, Colorvision and I launched this little photography contest, in celebration of colour - and by extension to highlight the importance of proper colour and monitor callibration when shooting digitally - we did not expect that it would be so popular. All of us were very happily overwhelmed. All in all, 149 contestants submitted 285 photos. The quality across the board was extremely high. All of the judges and I were really impressed. And we had a really tough time trying to decide which photos to pick as the top five.

Featured Photographer
Christopher Villano

Photographer Christopher Villano is a New Jersey native whose appreciations for photography, food and travel all started early in life. Growing up in an Italian-American family, enjoying good food was ways of life for Christopher and his brother and sisters.

"I spent a lot of time in the kitchen watching my mother and father carefully prepare meals," says Christopher. "And every chance I had as a child I would help my father at his butcher shop." This is where Chris first gained an appreciation for food and learned the importance of presentation.

While in high school, Christopher already knew he wanted see the world through a photographer's lens. He would ditch classes to assist on fashion photography shoots in New York City, and in 1996 he traveled west to study photography at Colorado Mountain College.

After a year's time, Christopher left the classroom to work for a photographer in London, England. He soon after returned to the States to pursue his photography career in New York City. Now, ten years later, Chris's various travels have helped create a diverse client list which includes Jungle Media, HCP/Abroad Publishing, Where Guest Book: NYC and Maxim Magazine.

The subjects he shoots are as expansive as his list of clients, with assignments ranging from cover shots for New Jersey Monthly Magazine and images for the Eco Institutes in Caribbean rainforests, to photographing the Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto.

Christopher photographs things he is passionate about: Food and Travel. His childhood experiences and various jobs as a cook have made for a natural transition from working with food to shooting it. As always, and with great respect for his talent, the nicest days for Chris are when he is playing with light, color, food and various concepts to create images he can be proud of.
